Five days trekking with donkeys

A wonderful route with the unforgettable views and landscapes of Piedmont and Valle d’Aosta. A journey of six days to admire the glaciers of Mount Rosa and the lush high altitude pastures of the valleys Sesia, Lys. Our donkeys will help us carrying baggage but will also enable us to live an amazing experience.

This animal, so fundamental in the past for the people of the valley living as shepherds, is today rediscovered for its behavioural characteristics that help to establish a simple and immediate harmony with people, in particular with children.

His docile and patient attitude and the slow pace of movement transmit tranquillity, peace and balance. Walking with donkeys in the woods is a real plunge into the serenity; you’ll feel in harmony with nature. It is a return to the origins in the absence of stress, a tribute to the slow tempo compared to speed, to the well-being and to the ability to share emotions with others simply and spontaneously.

FIRST DAY: Meeting place Valle Vogna Sant’Antonio 10.00 a.m.  MAP

The Walser are Germanic people who settled in many Alpine valleys during the Middle Ages. Our route starts from the superb Valley Vogna (Valsesia), with typical Walser villages and green pastures, to reach the Alpe Larecchio: a beautiful grassy valley with a small alpine lake. Here you will spend the night in a mountain hut, known for its excellent food and friendly welcome. 3 hours. 500 m up.

SECOND DAY: the path goes up the Valdobbia Pass (2480 m), the ancient road between Valsesia and Valle d’Aosta. Here we’ll reach the Ospizio Sottile, one of the oldest mountain huts in the Alps. The path then continues down to Gressoney Saint Jean. 6 hours. 600 m up, 1000 m down.

THIRD DAY: From Gressoney Saint Jean the path goes up along the Lys Valley to Gressoney La Trinetè. We’ll take the path along the river and through pastures and meadows, we reach Sant’Anna oratory and then Sitten Refuge, so suggestive with its beautiful view over the glaciers and Monte Rosa.  5 hours. 900 m up

FOURTH DAY: We descend along comfortable dirty roads until Staffal, at the bottom of the Valle del Lys, before recovering on the opposite side of Lake Gabiet (2370 m). Here we will stop at the hut Gabiet “by Sandro”, superb cook famous for its delicious recipes from the old alpine traditions. 4 hours. 500 m up, 500 m down.

FIFTH DAY: The trail continues to the Salati pass, at 2980 meters, the highest elevation we will reach during the tour. The track is very easy, but this passage from the Valle del Lys to Valsesia will remain in your memory, with the superb views over the glaciers and close to the Regina Margherita Hut (4559 m), the highest hut in Europe. Lastly, a final descent will take us back to Alagna into Valsesia, the greenest valley in Italy. 6 hours. 650 m up, 1800 m down.

CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT:good sturdy walking shoes are necessary, they should be already in use (we recommend not to use new shoes, that could hurt!). Clothing should be comfortable, warm or cool depending on the temperature: we advise dressing in layers (underwear T-shirt, t-shirts, longsleeved shirt, fleece) with technical material, which dries quickly, so as to minimize the spare parts. Essential a good backpack with a capacity of 50 to 60 litres (note that the larger, the easier it is to fill it with useless things), waterproof jacket and overpants, gloves and warm hat, sunglasses and cream, a water bottle, emergency food (some energy bars) and something to eat for lunch on the first day. Also do not forget the need for personal hygiene, wet wipes, a towel and a sheet bag (all sold in shelters). Telescopic trekking poles are recommended.
